THE
FORAGER
Caroline Davey - forager and professional ecologist
Caroline Davey has had a lifelong interest in the
natural world, having spent a colourful childhood in the Far East, Africa and
England where she experienced the wonders of nature in all its diversity and
beauty and vowed to follow a path in wildlife conservation.
She has worked as a professional ecologist in Cornwall since 1999 for CEC
Ltd, the Cornwall Wildlife Trust's Consultancy. She has a degree in Zoology
and a Masters degree in Environmental Impact Assessment. She is a Chartered
Environmentalist (CEnv) and a member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental
Management (MIEEM).
Caroline's professional work has involved vegetation surveys of native plant
communities in Cornwall. She has a good knowledge of where to find plants and
how to identify them accurately. Her work also includes assessing the impacts
of land use (eg. farming and development) on the quality of our wildlife habitats.
This puts Caroline in a good position for understanding the potential contamination
issues prevalent in our semi-wild habitats and how to forage safely.
Foraging came about from a natural union of two interests: plants and cooking.
Caroline loves cooking and has been using wild food for the last decade for
her family's table. She started foraging professionally whilst on maternity
leave with her son, Jed, in 2007 and has been supplying several local restaurants
with wild food on a weekly basis.
She now teaches people the art of foraging for wild food whilst continuing her
ecological work on a freelance basis.
